The institution firmly believes and attempts to inculcate core values of compassion, equity, integrity, skill development and national development. It is continuously striving towards drawing the best out of student’s potentiality by providing ample opportunities in an array of cocurricular activities, sports, games, art, cultural activities, YRC, NSS, NCC activities, awareness programs that enhance and encourage creativity, innovation, whereby they will realize their budding potential, and be encouraged to be future entrepreneurs, leaders and above all, good human beings.
The emblem of one of the fastest growing and leading College of North Western Odisha, Govt Women’s College, Sundargarh comprises of an open book with a Veena at the centre and a Diya at the uppermost part diffusing its gleaming rays. This epitomises knowledge and learning with deep spirituality as the highest priority. Moreover, the open book represents that knowledge could be acquired at any stage by anybody on equal basis. The Veena on the book symbolises the presence of Goddess of learning as well as divine melody showering the blessings of wisdom to all. The ripples of a river visible at the top of the book are destined to meet the gigantic sea. This characterises that ‘individuality’ is a part of eternity and the latter being the goal of every human being. The burning lamp and the rising sun are the sparks of divinity to dispel the darkness of ignorance and spread the light of knowledge and intellect. The heptagonal form incorporates a pattern comprising of art and embroidery. This embroidery is symbolic of feminine grace and charm.
The Shloka below the crest displays – ‘Asato ma Satgamaya, tamasa-ma Jyotirgamaya’ which sums up the goal of a pertinent learner - ‘Lead me from darkness to light, from ignorance to enlightenment.’ The ultimate motto of the institution expresses its ethos and culture which prepares for a better tomorrow with abundance knowledge.
Government Women’s College, Sundargarh formerly known as Sundargarh Women’s College, originated with the initiative of the enthusiastic public of the district. A long felt need of higher education for women in the region was fulfilled with the opening of this college. The former College was inaugurated on 12th July, 1978 in the Biramitra Club and functioned there till 12th June 1985. Meanwhile, the College was taken over by the government of Odisha on 22nd August 1983. Since 13th June 1985 the Women’s College was functioning in the Panchayat Bhawan with the provision of B.A. courses with six honours subjects such as History, Political Science, Odia, Education, Home Science and Economics.
Eventually in 2016, the college came up with B.Sc courses with five honours subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Geology, Zoology and Mathematics. Gradually, looking at the demands of the students nine numbers of new honours subjects such as Anthropology, English, Sociology, Geography, Psychology, Hindi, Sanskrit, Sociology, Computer Science with new Commerce stream and PG program in former 12 Arts and Science subjects were opened from the session 2023-2024.
The institution has intended to empower students by providing affordable value-oriented quality higher education, equipping them with knowledge and skills in their streams and exploring their hidden talents. Moreover, our college logo conveys “तमसो माँ ज्योतिर्गमय” (lead us from darkness to light, from ignorance to enlightenment) with academic excellence. The institution attempts to release ample opportunities for creativity, innovation, research, study and training within the academic environment whereby they will realize their budding potential, and be encouraged to be future entrepreneurs, leaders and above all, good human beings.
